Just a bottle of classical lager isn’t cutting it for many people anymore. Beer drinkers have become explorers of the different varieties of craft beer and are looking for much more interesting flavours. Even the “No, thanks, I don’t drink beer” kind of people are starting to change their minds.

There’s always something interesting to learn about beer and our friend Marius is the guy who knows a lot plus he loves talking about it. So we invite you over to Köök for a beer tasting with him. It’s a perfect addition to a cooking class!

Marius will tell you a bit more:

Who is the beer course for?

The beer course is for anyone who want’s to educate him/herself about beer, beginners and experts alike. No one knows everything and there is always something interesting to learn about beer.

What’s the course like?

The main idea behind this beer course is to make people understand how versatile and complex drink beer is and it is not that fizzy watery mass produced beverage that you consume with your mates just because it is a common habit.

Through 1,5 hours we talk about history of beer, ingredients, brewing process, we try 6 different beers, and focus on beer styles and classification.

What kind of beers will be tasted?

I have chosen for this beer course 6 beers that are totally different to each other and they all have interesting background or have been somehow “game changers” of the beer world. The list of beers as follows:

Pilsner Urquell

Paulaner Salvator

Muddis Saison

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Fullers London Porter

La Trappe Quadrupel

What’s your favourite beer at the moment?

It is difficult to say just one favourite because I have favourites within every beer style but one beer I always go back to if I have a chance is 8wired Hopwired.

Irish soda bread is definitely one of the easiest and quickest bread recipes you’ll find and it’s also super delicious! The best thing about it is that you can just add your favourite ingredients from savoury to sweet to get different variations. As it’s the season of wild garlic, we tried the recipe with a handful of this and the result turned out really tasty!

250g of wholegrain flour
250g strong white flour
400ml buttermilk
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 egg
1 tsp honey
1 handful of wild garlic leaves, roughly chopped
A pinch of salt

Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda, wild garlic and salt.
Meanwhile mix the butter milk, egg and honey.
Simply mix the wet ingredients with a wooden spoon or hands. Add extra flour if the mixture is too soft (like wise add more butter milk if the mixture is too dry).
Mix together to form a dough. Shape into a rough oval/ or long bread shape and place on a baking tray. Score with a knife.
Sprinkle with a little flour on top and bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes at 180 degrees.
Turn out the bread onto a cooling rack, tap the base. If it sounds hollow the bread is ready.

Allow to cool and enjoy with butter!
